Mofongo (mashed plantains) with lemon colada martini (Darius Cooks)PuertoRican comfort food quicker and easier. Every family makes it differently like mashed potatoes.
Mofongo is usually made with crispy pork skins. We keep it lighter without the pork, even lighter by air frying the plantains. We like to eat as a side dish with roasted chicken or pepper & onion beef.

We have moved into virtual and there is no turning back. So HOW do we adapt to this new era of virtual socialization? We did our research to find the best content on how to brunch virtually. It is written by a coffeee blog called the MistoBox. We've actually taken some tips from them to host our very own.!

The truth of the matter is that we all need to start somewhere. During small beginnings, what normally happens is that one tends to put in a lot of work, effort so to speak with minimal support and encouragement. Small beginnings often require dedication and commitment.
A lot of time and hours has to be put into what you have started. It is not unusual to experience setbacks in one way or another. The important thing is to keep going and not give up. The Word of God tells us in Zechariah 4:10:
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin.
So even if it’s a small beginning....it’s a start and that my friends is reason for rejoicing!!!
This month's top story is all a9bout BLYSS Development Group. 4 local Syracuse women taking charge and leading the way in neighborhood development. While some may find interest in what they are going to be developing (I am as well) I really thought most of us would love to learn more about who they are and how this amazing venture unfolded. 4 powerful local Syracuse women. Melanin poppin' all over the book, facebook that is. I had to ask.
On January 19th, 2021 Facebook went into a viral frenzy amongst the local Syracuse community when Ulonda Hudgins-Johnson one of the dynamic quad venturist posted a photo of the group on her page. The caption read "Four-Like-Minded Women, Walking Together, Working Together, Building Together". Familiar with the ladies of BLYSS I immediately knew this was a story that needed to be told as their venture unfolded. I wanted the exclusive knowing we were about to launch during Women’s Month and with our brand of authenticity and sisterhood this story was a perfect fit.
I read the quote again, “Four-Like-Minded Women, Walking Together, Working Together, Building Together". Historically within narratives of sisterhood particularly among black women words such as "like minded" and "together" has its fair share of tug and war between positive and the negative traits like; jealousy and envy, support and collaboration, however the one that I hear most come into play are distrust and poor communication. So how did this unfold? All four women are established business owners in their own right. 2 are hybrid-prenuers and 2 work full time in their own businesses.
Keen to observing patterns and connectivity I wondered if they themselves noticed a harmonist alignment they have as a group and their symmetrical personality traits they bring with them. They are all beautiful women inside and out. Each carries a heart of servitude and warrior/queen spirit. Very succesful in their own right and are ready to be the example and inspire other girl and women to come together, boss up, make money and make a difference while doing it!
Like any partnership there are growing pains in the process. We have 4 women all entrepreneurs, alpha fems, and all are assertive. So what are those growing pains and how did they get through it? What are some of their best practices to share with other women? What do they hope to accomplish out of this union?... Listen up to this engaging conversation with the women of Blyss. Smile, laugh and talk to yourself saying things like "I know that's right" and "ahhh I get that" or "that's deep sis" right here:

Check out our interview with Tamica Barnett
Who Want Smoke BBQ & Catering is led by Tamica Barnett, an acclaimed firehouse chef, and pitmaster who was born and raised in Syracuse.
1. First of all, I checked your site out and your menu is Smokin’ hot, pun intended. Why did you decide to go into the food industry and start a catering and food service business?
I saw a need. In the past families cam together over food. I’ve been in many different settings, the one food that seems to be universal is BBQ. Everyone loves BBQ. So from a business and marketing stand point, its a larger market. Also, there’s not very many women around here that grill and smoke meat. I try to advance in a lane of my own. We don’t have any grassroots BBQ restaurants locally, especially with a black woman as the chef.
2. How long has Who Want Smoke BBQ been in business?
Who want smoke has been in operation officially since March of 2020. I’ve volunteered to cook for large fathers long before the business launch. I am also the director of a youth basketball league at the Boys & Girls Club on the east side. When I first took over the league, we could afford to host a fancy banquet at the end of the season... so I would spend days cooking for 300 people to come and enjoy a meal and celebrate another successful basketball season.
3. It’s Women’s History Month! We wanted to highlight you for your very admirable and inspiring community service initiative you did for Black History Month. One among many. Why did you decide to do the Black History Free Soul Food Give Away?
I feel like as a community, we are losing our family ties. I decided to host a free soul food event highlighting Syracuse nativeswith research performed by our students. I remember sitting down eating dinner as a family at 5pm and people discussing how their day went, and families communicating with eachother. For many reasons, family time is lost. I wanted to provide a service to the community, take the load off, enjoy a free soul food meal, and also learn about Syracuse Black history and the history of soul food and how it brought people together. I believe the youth are our greatest asset. I had them take the lead on the research and in doing so, they now have experience organizing and planning a large community project. They personally interviewed the ppl we highlighted. Now they have mentors outside of their family members that can help create opportunities for them. But most importantly I started the conversation- we have a lot of assets and local history right here in our city and it’s time to tap into it.
4. How did the community respond to the event? Was it successful (how so)?
I receive a lot of positive feedback about the event. People enjoyed the food and they learned some things they didn’t know. As far as the magazines, some loved it, some felt as though they should have been included. One of the hardest aspects of the project was deciding who to highlight. I didn’t want to focus too heavily on political figures- but we have a lot of political history in Syracuse. In the end, we ( my team) decided that this is something we would do going forward. This year's theme was the past, the present, and the future. So we had folks from all walks of life. I wanted every reader to find the text relatable- students, seniors citizens...etc.
5. We say tribe a lot in our community of blackness? Did you have one and who were they during this process?
I always have a tribe. It truly takes a strong tribe to get things done. My tribe included: Rickey Brown, Amanda Shepherd, Jessica Elliot, Rasheada Caldwell, Helen Hudson, Vernon Williams Jr, Indaria Jones, Mauresha Stenson, and most importantly the students that worked extra hard to see this project through. And the donors that helped lighten the financial load: Gifford Foundation, Syracuse teaching Kitchen, Dunbar Center, Boys & Girls Club, The Creators Lounge and Diversify NY.
7. What are 3 things you love about your community?
I love the culture. I love the fact that we are so innovative.... and I love the family vibe... we bleed orange, and for some of us, blood couldn't make us any closer.
8. Today it is said that many of our disadvantaged communities across the Country lack leadership and that leaders only look out for themselves. However Syracuse has a unique service infrastructure within its leadership. There’s always a community initiative happening in town. Why is it important for leaders to be mindful and show acts of kindness in their communities?
True leaders breed other leaders... it’s the reach back. We all come from the same community, the more I achieve, the more resources I have access to. I can’t speak for all community leaders, but my goal is to build snd enable more young ppl to rise and create pathways for them to be successful. Giving back to the community comes naturally to me because everything I do is from the heart with good intent. It’s important to display acts of kindness to the community, if you are successful and don’t reach back to help someone else then in my opinion your not a leader. I’ve fixed a lot of crowns in private.
9. What’s next for Who Want Smoke BBQ that we could look forward to in the near future?
The possibilities are endless. One of my best qualities is that I’m spontaneous, and I get things done. I brainstorm beat at night. There’s definitely more to come in terms of community service from those who want to smoke, I’m just not sure what it will be. Definitely an addition to the black history event at the very least.
10. Sisterhood! What does it mean to you?
Sisterhood is fixing each other’s crown and not telling everyone you had to do it. It’s correcting our imperfections in private. It’s sharing information to help eachother get ahead. It’s defending eachother in such a way that we don’t have to run back and tell what someone had to say because “it’s handled” - and I’ll tell you- I have a lot of sisters hunnntttyyy.
Each month we highlight an organization in the community that is impactful and effective and truly makes a difference in the lives of young girls. This month's pick is the one and only PGR Foundation. We all know how important it is to mentor young girls. This organization has been around the city of Syracuse for over 10 years and has mastered the art of collaboration. Navigate their site, see what you like and give on behalf of that. The fact that they are doers and you like what they do. They truly are out here Making A Difference.
Glow Now Girl- Girls Loving Ourselves Worldwide is a worldwilde girl empowerment collective of sisterhood, motivation and good deed initiatives founded by 13 year old Samaia Goodrich in Syracuse, NY. This initiative will connect young girls from Samaia's hometown with other like-minded girls from all over the globe and we are here for ALL of it. What a visionary this little sister is. The organization is currently looking for GlowMa's to pair with the Glow girls as mentors and guides. I have found the commitment is manageable and soul fulfilling for more seasoned women who are seeking way to give back some of the wisdom they've gained throughout navigating life. Samaia started volunteering at the young age of 7 years old, constantly looking for ways to give back and support her community. In 2019 she was named one of America’s top 10 national honorees for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. there were 29,000 applicants. Check out the Little sisters site and feel free to contact she and her team are waiting to hear from you.
Just recently Gianna was featured in the Local Spectrum News for creatively finding a way to sell her Girl Scout Cookies during the pandemic to those of us who love the chocolaty minty taste of Thin Mints and absolutely refuse to get them from anywhere else by any other brand besides Girl Scouts and their troops. Check out her awesome feature that caught our teams attention.
The young women are apart of AGW - Anointed Grace Worshipers - with G.R.A.C.E Ministries. Each one has a beautiful, POWERFUL, testimony.
But this right here is their war cry!

Coach Cedeño Patrick is from Mt. Vernon, NY. and grew up in Wilmington Delaware. He received his bachelors of science in sports management from Delaware State in 2008. He is a professional arena football player and former Division 1 Football and Track & Field athlete. After a life altering injury tearing his PCL, LCL, and MCL of the knee and going through a 7 hour surgery with 2 years of rehabilitation, coach Patrick admits the mental and physical healing process initially took a toll on him, he didn't give up. Not on himself or his love for football. It was the love and support from his immediate family, his ambitious nature and beastly mentality that wouldn't allow him to quit. Eventually this alteration allotted him a transition experience that would place him in a new position to living out his purpose in life and sports. In fact, it expanded his experience and insight in the industry so much that he now has expanded his training brand into the world of health & wellness.
Zilla Nutrition is fairly new on the market only released to the public in January 2021. It is already receiving rave reviews. Aside from his existing clients being first customers of the nutrition drink he says his current customers tend to be predominantly women. One of his core services in his training venture is developing Strength & Conditioning programs for professional athletes. His diverse clientele range of athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB, CFL and the AFL. He also works with collegiate (DIV 1) and high school students, some of whom Cedeno coached from Mt. Vernon high school like defensive back Davon Moore and Chris Cooper / Denver Broncos and he currently trains and Shawn Harris Jr. / Stony Brook College, all from Mt. Vernon, NY. There’s Qadree Ollison / Atlanta Falcons. Qandree is from Niagara Falls not too far from our headquarters in Syracuse, NY, Josh Hawkins / Green Bay Packers, and more. Most athletes are extremely confident in what they do and coach Patrick is no stranger to that trait. As he should hiis peers will tell you he can back it up.
When not training, Coach Patrick is on the road inspiring others. He is also a motivational speaker and has been giving motivational speeches for years at team camps, clinics, and pre-game locker room meetings. He recently accepted an invitation to be the keynote speaker at his alma mater Delaware for their Annual Sports Management Conference. Feel free to connect, that's what we are here for and tell him 3E's sent you! Cedeno and his family of 5 currently reside in Lakeview, GA.
We will certainly learn more of Ms. Justine in April. She has an amazing story and perspective on being an athletes wife, a mom and an entrepreneur. Her husband wanted us to know she's his number 1 teammate and tho he's the CEO he not doing this alone. We like this trend Of men highlighting the women in their lives that keep them going.

Video meetings are now the new normal, as teams are no longer working together in the same office. While virtual meetings can pose a few challenges, they can be just as effective as face to face meetings as long as they’re run properly.
